Tragic Poppi cops’ ‘breakthrough’ in dad’s laptop hunt
‘He watched porn on night she died’
DETECTIVES hunting for a laptop used by Poppi Worthington’s dad to watch porn on the night she died have found a computer.
Officers investigating 13-monthold Poppi’s death hope the machine will provide them with vital clues.
Her father Paul Worthington has never been charged despite a coroner and a judge both concluding he sexually assaulted her in the hours before she died in 2012.
Cumbria Police said: “The constabulary can confirm officers have recovered a number of items, including a laptop. The laptop is subject to meticulous forensic examination to determine whether it is relevant to potential enquiries concerning Poppi Worthington.”
It was reported this weekend that Mr Worthington says he had given the laptop to his neighbour. It is thought the computer was then sold on. A family court judge concluded in 2016 that Mr Worthington abused Poppi shortly before she died at their home in Barrowin-furness, Cumbria. A coroner reached the same conclusion this year at the second inquest into the death. Mr Worthington refused to answer questions about the death, relying 252 times on his right to remain silent under inquest rules designed to stop people incriminating themselves. The coroner found that Poppi died in her dad’s bed due to asphyxiation caused by being in an “unsafe sleeping environment”. Mr Worthington was arrested in 2013. He told police he watched porn on a missing laptop the night of the tragedy. This year the Crown Prosecution Service ruled out what would have been a fourth review of evidence, saying no new witnesses had come forward.
