Police begin probe into fatal smash

POLICE are trying to piece together the final movements of a car travelling in the wrong direction that was involved in a fatal motorway smash.

Detectives want to understand how the silvercoloured vehicle travelled from the Sydenham by-pass to the M2 where it ended up in a five-vehicle crash.

All five city-bound lanes of the motorway were closed down after the incident, at around 3.50pm on Sunday.

A fleet of emergency vehicles rushed to the scene and police called for people to stay off roads across Belfast as the incident caused knock-on traffic chaos.

One man, understood to be driver of the car being driven the wrong way, died in the crash and a further three people were taken to hospital. They have since been discharged.

Insp Andrew Wilson from the Collision Investigation Unit said: “At approximately 3.50pm on Sunday police received several reports of a silver car travelling in the wrong direction along the M3, Belfast, from Sydenham by-pass towards the M2.

“We are working to establish where this vehicle joined the M3 and its subsequent movements prior to the collision.

“I would appeal to anyone who has dash cam footage of this vehicle or information relating to this incident to contact the Collision Investigation Unit at Sprucefield on the non-emergency number 101.

“I also wish to express my thanks to the members of the public who have already come forward and provided us with dash cam footage and witness accounts leading up to this road traffic collision.”
