UNITED ARE LEFT

-

CO Londonderry claimed a massive win over Manchester United at the Supercupni last night.

A double from Lee Harkin saw Martin Smith’s young side see off the Red Devils at the Coleraine Showgrounds.

Harkin broke the deadlock in the first minute but United soon levelled through Jovani Molenge.

Charlie Savage – son of former Wales midfielder Robbie - then hit the crossbar for the English giants.

It would be Co Londonderry who would prevail with Harkin scoring a late winner.

It was a huge win for the local side who have games against Club NI and Glasgow Rangers to come in the Junior Section.

“Every single one of my players is a hero tonight,” proud manager Smith said.

“We are obviously delighted to get the win and it sets us up for the rest of the week.

“This will give us a lift. I don’t think people expected us to get a result tonight, but I did. I believe in my players.

“The boys should be really proud of themselves. This is a great result.”

Co Londonderry raced into a dream start when Harkin broke the deadlock in the opening minute.

United barely had time to settle when Harkin lofted a shot over the head of Daniel Polakowski.

It didn’t take United long to respond, however, with Molenge equalising from close range before the break.

Savage then rattled the crossbar as United went in hunt of a winner, but they were upstaged by striker Harkin.

And it was another clinical finish, with Harkin cutting in from the left and giving Polakowski no chance with a low shot.

Co Londonderry’s big win wasn’t the only significicant success for county teams last night.
