Philip: Do I want to meet Sir Michael Caine?no

- BY TOM BRYANT Head of Showbiz

THE Duke of Edinburgh snubbed the chance to meet Sir Michael Caine and other stars of the film about the £14million Hatton Garden heist.

Prince Philip, 97, made an unexpected stop at the set, where actors Sir Tom Courtenay, Paul Whitehouse and Ray Winstone were also filming.

Comic Whitehouse, 60, said: “Prince Philip came to visit us on set one day. We were filming in Windsor.”

Sexy Beast star Winstone, 61, added: “He pulled up and the window went down on the Range Rover and he said, ‘What are you doing?’. I said, ‘We’re making a film, Sir, with Sir Tom Courtenay and Sir Michael Caine, would you like to meet them?’.

“And he went, ‘No’.”

Winstone is playing his childhood pal Daniel Jones in the film and told of how he visited him in jail to get his blessing.

Speaking on the Jonathan

Ross show, he said: “I sat next to him at school. I wanted to visit him before we did the film, not to find out anything about him because I knew about him. But out of respect really, to let him know I was playing him and find out how he felt about me playing him.”

King of Thieves tells of the audacious raid over Easter bank holiday 2015 in which the gang bored a hole through a vault wall to ransack deposit boxes.

The crime movie also stars Sir Michael Gambon and Jim Broadbent, and hits cinemas next Friday.

The Jonathan Ross Show returns to ITV tomorrow at 9.45pm.
