STEPHEN Lawrence murder suspect Jamie Acourt was jailed for nine years over a huge drugs plot.

Acourt, 42, fled to Spain and was on the run for more than two years before being extradited for his pivotal role in the £3million plan to run cannabis into the North East.

The gang based in Eltham, South London, used peddlars they knew well or were related to and in two years made 34 return trips of 600 miles to ferry cash or drugs.

Jurors heard Acourt, of Eltham, was never convicted over the racist killing of Stephen, 18, in 1993. He admitted conspiracy midway through his trial at Kingston crown court.

Steve Reynolds, of the National Crime Agency, said: “I’m delighted that today he has been brought to justice.”
