TWO HELD OVER ‘MURDER’
Body of man found in seaside flat
TWO people remained in custody last night on suspicion of murder after a body was found in a flat.
Padraig Fox, 29, was discovered in Burrendale Park Road in Newcastle, Co Down, on Saturday.
Police said yesterday they were treating his death as murder.
SDLP MLA Colin Mcgrath, whose office is based in the popular seaside town, said: “The death in Newcastle will come as a complete shock. News has filtered through over the weekend that a person has passed away in suspicious circumstances and is being investigated as a murder.
“Such news always sends a chill through the community.”
Local Councillor Laura Devlin added: “I would urge anyone with any information to let the police know. A family will be dealing with this tragic news in the days leading up to Christmas and that will be just awful.”
Detective Chief Inspector Peter Mckenna, who is leading the investigation, said: “Police received a report at 1.45pm on Saturday the body of a man had been discovered at a flat.
“Following a postmortem on Sunday, I am now treating this death as murder.”
Detectives from the Major Investigations Team were yesterday granted an additional 36 hours to question a 26-year-old man.
A 21-year-old man also remains in police custody assisting with inquiries.
