OISIN’S HERO FAL GUY SHOWS HE’S VERA GOOD
OISIN MURPHY added quality to quantity as Veracious proved the real deal in the Group 1 Tattersalls Falmouth
Stakes.
Murphy (right) is the bookies’ oddsfavourite to clinch a first jockeys’ title in 2019 after amassing a 61-strong haul going into Feel Good Friday of Newmarket’s July Festival.
None of those victories had been at the highest level, but Murphy opened his Group 1 account for the campaign with an all-the-way masterclass aboard the Sir Michael Stoute-saddled 6-1 chance.
After his mount, fourth in the Group 2 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot last month, had stuck on stubbornly to deny One Master by a neck, the 23-year-old Irishman said: “These Group 1 races are hard to come by. I had a brilliant year last year, and of course you want to keep progressing.
“If I go a day without riding a winner I get on top of myself, and so to get on this filly with a chance in a Group 1 was huge.
“I got some confidence from Sir Michael. She was well beaten in a Group 2 last time against a similar field — he wouldn’t run in
a Group 1 for no reason.” Stoute (right), welcoming a record-equalling sixth triumph in the fillies’ mile test, added: “Oisin rode her beautifully.
“She ran very well at Ascot, but was doing a little too much and we didn’t want that to happen today. She has taken a long time to really ripen but Ryan Moore rode her a week ago and he said she was there now.” Queen Mary Stakes heroine Raffle Prize gave her backers another winning ticket when lifting the Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes.
