I’ve missed you, Daddy

Touching reunion as jailed Nazanin’s girl returns home to UK

- BY MIKEY SMITH Political Correspondent

NAZANIN Zaghari-ratcliffe’s joyful daughter Gabriella gives dad her Richard a huge hug after arriving back home in the UK yesterday.

The five-year-old grinned as she carefully sliced a “welcome home” cake at a press conference in Westminster.

Her parents made the painful decision to bring her back from Iran for the first time since Nazanin’s 2016 arrest so she can start school.

Speaking to journalists afterwards, Richard gestured to the next room where Gabriella was waiting and said: “We were just negotiating what she wants to do this afternoon, and a toy shop is where we’re off to.”

Richard said he had asked Boris Johnson for a meeting to discuss plans to secure his wife’s release since he became PM, but he had not received an answer.

Nazanin is on spying charges but her sentence was extended in 2017 after the then Foreign Secretary gaffed by saying she went there to train journalists.

Richard said: “I would expect a meeting. I’ve met him before, he was perfectly charming and decent. He made that promise. It’s time to deliver on it.”

He said he had spoken to Nazanin the night before Gabriella left and that she was “really upset”.

He said: “It’s one of the things she didn’t want to happen, for her daughter to leave and her still be stuck in prison.”

But he added: “Seeing [Gabriella] was lovely. And bless her, she’s a bit shy and a bit traumatised and hasn’t seen daddy for a long time. But it’s just lovely to have her back.”

Richard, of Hampstead, North London, hopes she might start at a school after half term.
