FILIP FOR GERS

Helander and Defoe on target in comeback win

-

CELTIC stay top of the Scottish Premier League – but Rangers’ 2-1 home victory over Motherwell means only goal difference separates the Old Firm.

Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard was in no mood for hanging out the bunting, though.

Filip Helander’s 80th-minute minute header completed Rangers’ comeback after Jermain Defoe had cancelled out Devante Cole’s opener. Gerrard said: “I think we got away with one today.

“We weren’t at our best but I was happy with our reaction after half-time.

“A lot of the problems in the first half were self-inflicted.

“But of course it’s good to win when we haven’t played well. It disappointed me that we weren’t difficult to play against today.

“Defoe’s goal was a typical Defoe goal – and he was one of the few who did well.”

Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson said: “We gave them more than a game. The challenge now is taking our quality today into the next matches.”

Neil Lennon says Celtic’s first-half display in their

4-0 win at Aberdeen was as good as he has seen from his players.

Lennon (left) praised his side for the way they cruised to victory three days after Thursday’s dramatic Europa League defeat of Lazio.

Odsonne Edouard (above), Jeremie Frimpong, James Forrest and Mohamed Elyounoussi struck before half-time to kill off the game. The Celtic manager said: “It’s up there with the best 45 minutes I’ve seen from the players.

“They were relentless and the quality of their play was fantastic.

“It’s a big ask to come here after Thursday and perform like they did.

“I have immense pride in that performance and the players can take an enormous amount of pride too.”

Lennon recalled last weekend’s 6-0 victory over Ross County and added: “It’s been a brilliant week. We’ve scored 10 goals in the league and had a fantastic win against Lazio.

“Mentally and physically, Lazio was so draining.”
