Flybe loses court case over ‘unfair’ bag charge

- BY SHAUNA CORR

A NORTHERN Ireland man has taken Flybe to the small claims court over a baggage charge and won.

Declan Gormley said the airline approved his bag in Belfast but then charged him £50 for its return to the city from Aberdeen, claiming it exceeded the stipulated size.

He told BBC Radio Ulster’s On Your Behalf programme: “In the last 12 months alone I probably would have had eight to 10 flights with Flybe using exactly the same bag that I turned up at Belfast airport on April 19 with.”

He claimed the airline had no issues with the size of his bag on these flights.

After a phone call to Flybe’s Exeter office and 10 emails without resolution, Mr Gormley decided to take the airline to the small claims court.

The judge ruled in his favour and the airline was told to refund his £50 plus his £37 court fee.

Mr Gormley hopes the case will make the airline rethink the application of its baggage policy.

A spokesperson said: “Flybe can confirm that it received and is complying with the NI court and tribunal service ruling dated October 10, 2019.”
