NI parties gear up for battle of hearts & minds

-

NORTHERN Ireland’s political parties were swift to bare their election teeth last night with the DUP savaging their unionist rivals for snubbing an poll pact.

South Belfast DUP took to social media to try and pressure new Ulster Unionist leader Steven Aiken to join forces for the area’s Westminster seat. Emma Littlepengelly’s constituency could go to any number of candidates.

The DUP account said: “Steve Aiken took over the top spot in the Ulster Unionist Party last week. We congratulate him on this recent appointment.

“I’m sure like you, we were all hoping that as leader he would work together with all unionists to achieve the common goal of defending the Union. Which transcends the interests of party.

“Unfortunately Steve Aiken’s first call as leader was to split unionism and utterly rule out any co-operation. This is regrettable and totally out of step with what unionists want.

“When unionists unite, the country wins. When unionists turn guns against one another, we all lose. The conclusion is simple.”

As the December 12 date was set, Sinn Fein deputy leader Michelle O’neill said: “This election is an opportunity to reject the toxic Brexit that is being forced on our island by the Tories and DUP.

“Seize this opportunity to reject borders and division. Vote for an inclusive and prosperous future within a new Ireland.”

Elsewhere, SDLP leader Colum Eastwood said: “An election is coming. The SDLP is ready to fight the Tories and DUP on Brexit, welfare cuts and to protect our NHS. Unlike others, the SDLP will turn up for you. Register to vote to send politicians who want to work back to work and send the Tory/ DUP coalition packing.”

The 10 Democratic Unionist Party MPS voted in favour of the election while Independent MP Lady Sylvia Hermon was among the 20 who voted against.
