Tesco Heinz baby food recall amid safety fear

-

TENS of thousands of jars of Heinz baby food have been axed from all Tesco stores amid fears some may have been sabotaged.

Tesco, which has 3,400 shops, was at the centre of a scare after two metal shards were found in a jar that had been tampered with.

Parents are being urged to check cupboards for Heinz By Nature 7+ months baby foods which are sold in 200g jars and have now been recalled.

Flavours affected are sweet and sour chicken, mango chicken curry, cottage pie, cheesy and tomato pasta stars, Sunday chicken dinner, spaghetti bolognese, winter veggies and lamb, and pasta bake with tuna.

Yesterday Tesco and Heinz issued a joint statement and said no child had been injured but police were investigating.

They added: “Safety is our number one priority. Products in the range were removed from sale immediately and we are taking this voluntary recall action as a precaution.

“We regret that this incident has happened and are sorry for the concern and the inconvenience that this recall may cause.”

The Food Standards Agency also issued a warning saying: ”Two sharp metal fragments were found in the jar.

“If you have bought any of the above products do not feed it to your baby. Instead, return it to the Tesco store from where it was bought for a full refund.” Heinz and Tesco said the dodgy jar was discovered earlier this week but could not reveal which store was targeted or who made the discovery as the matter was “in police hands”.

Posters advertising the recall are in Tesco stores and other supermarkets are not affected by the scare.

The joint statement with Heinz added: “The action only involves these varieties sold in Tesco.

“No other Tesco or branded baby products are affected.

“No other Heinz baby foods in jars or other packs are involved.”
