Ulster honours for football, athletics, golf..and mash

ALMOST 100 people from Northern Ireland have been named on the New Year Honours list.

They include soccer star Aaron Hughes who was awarded an MBE for services to football.

Born in Cookstown, Aaron, 40, played 110 times for Northern Ireland and captained the team from 2003 to his retirement in 2011.

Still on the subject of sport, Michael

Mckillop was awarded an MBE for his services to Disability Awareness and

Athletics in Northern Ireland. The middle distance runner won gold for Ireland in the 2008 Summer Paralympic­s and now works as a fitness instructor and motivation­al speaker. Wilma Erskine-heggarty, secretary of Royal Portrush Golf Club, was awarded the British Empire Medal for services to tourism and golf.

Andrew Browne, secretary of the

Historical Institutio­nal Abuse Inquiry, was made an OBE for his services to victims and survivors of abuse. Paula Dawson from the NI Executive was made an MBE for her services to Public

Inquiries in Northern Ireland.

And Tracy Pringle, director of Mash Direct,

was made an MBE for services to the Northern Ireland agri-food sector.

Other honours include OBES for Patrick Gray of Connswater Homes Limited for services to housing; John Healy, managing director of Allstate Northern Ireland for services to the economy; Olive Hill, director of Invest NI, for services to the economy; Timothy Losty, director of the Northern Ireland Bureau China, for services to internatio­nal and community relations; and Maria Mchugh, Dean of Ulster University Business School, for services to higher education and business developmen­t.
