Olivia loses her Crown

Season 3 of loved royal drama fails to make it on to Netflix series top 10

LAVISH and highly-acclaimed royal drama The Crown may be slipping, according to its makers, Netflix.

The prestigious historical production returned to the TV streaming service in November for its third season.

Yet it has failed to make Netflix’s top 10 list of the year’s series.

At the top of the pile is The Witcher, a Game of Thrones-style fantasy starring Superman actor Henry Cavill, only released this month. The surprising slip came after Oscar-winner Olivia Colman, 45, took over the role of The Queen from Claire Foy, 35, who played the young monarch in seasons one and two.

Some viewers prefer Foy in the part and others have questioned if the writing of series three is as good as the series released in 2016 and 2017. Netflix even made the premiere of season three available for free to non-subscribers.

Alongside Colman, Helena Bonham Carter plays Princess Margaret as the season spans 1964 to 1977 and includes Harold Wilson’s two periods as prime minister.

Netflix rarely publishes viewing figures so the lists are the closest indicator of a show’s popularity. The Disappearance Of Madeleine Mccann, After Life and Sex Education dominated the lists of most popular releases in the UK this year.

The Irishman, with Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci, and Murder Mystery, starring Jennifer Aniston, were among the featured films.

The Crown is expected to run for six series, with Imelda Staunton taking over as the Queen in series five.
