PSNI officers win 2.5% pay rise in line with UK
Above inflation increase welcomed
PSNI officers are to receive an above inflation pay rise backdated to September.
Justice Minister Naomi Long announced the 2.5% increase following approval from the Department of Finance.
She said: “I welcome the conclusion of the 2019/20 pay round for PSNI officers in the federated and superintending ranks.
“The award is consistent with the recommendations of the independent Police Remuneration Review Body and recognises the work of police officers in Northern Ireland.”
The Department of Justice added the 2.5% award would align officers with those in England and Wales. UK inflation currently sits at a six-month high of 1.8%.
Mrs Long said: “Our police officers are committed to serving everyone in Northern Ireland and keeping people safe.
“It is a crucial role at the heart of our community and I would urge anyone who is considering joining the PSNI to visit www.join.psni.co.uk.”
A Police Federation for Northern Irelandspokespersonadded: “This is the third year in a row that agreed and approved pay increases have been delayed because of the absence of a minister. We welcome confirmation the increase will be backdated.
“We will shortly engage with the Police Remuneration Review Body on a new round of pay discussions with a view to securing agreement by June. This 2.5% increase retains core pay spines with colleagues in England and Wales and we are determined to maintain that position once we enter formal discussions.”
Alliance MLA and Policing Board member John Blair said: “I am pleased Justice Minister Naomi Long has taken this decision to bring pay parity for police officers here, which is thoroughly deserved, and done so as one of her first major decisions as minister.
“With the cost of living rising, it is vital we recognise the role played by those keeping us safe and crucial we provide them with a fair income for doing so. A just compensation is the least they deserve.”
