Home Office ‘lost track of illegals total’

THE Home Office has “no idea” how many people are in the UK illegally and seems to have no interest in finding out, a Labour MP has warned.

The last estimate was in 2005, when the total was put at 430,000, the National Audit Office found.

Meg Hillier, chairwoman of the Public Accounts Committee, said: “The Home Office can’t demonstrate that its actions to control illegal immigration are working as intended.”

The Home Office said it had deported 53,000 criminals since 2010.
