Storm&flood on way, then a heatwave

- BY JEREMY ARMSTRONG

THUNDERSTORMS, flash floods and “mini tornados” are forecast to sweep over much of Britain today.

Yellow weather warnings are in place – but a heatwave is due next week.

Today’s rain could cause flooding in the West, from Cornwall to Glasgow and parts of Northern Ireland then move eastwards.

The freak weather, compared to the “super cell” conditions of Tornado Alley in the central US, is expected to subside gradually by tomorrow.

Already 23,000 lightning strikes since Saturday have been reported.

The Met Office said: “Up to 35mm of rain an hour could disrupt transport and damage properties.”

The thunder precedes rocketing temperatures of 28C next week.
