NO ROOM FOR OZ IN WANE’S NEW WORLD

- BY GARETH WALKER

ENGLAND coach Shaun Wane has no intention of chasing heritage-qualified players such as NRL star Victor Radley to join his World Cup bid.

Sydney Roosters loose forward Radley (above) has been one of the stars of the Australia season to date and qualifies for England through his Sheffield-born father.

But the player himself publicly qualified initial comments last year about the possibility of playing for England by committing to New South Wales and Australia.

And Wane has no intention of trying to change his or anybody else’s mind ahead of next year’s World Cup.

Wane told Betfred’s The Last Tackle Podcast: “If he (Radley) can prove to me he’s English and wants to play for England and gets in touch, then I’ll have a look at it.

“But I’m all for out-and-out Englishmen, I’m very patriotic and very proud. I’m happy with the squad I’ve got at the minute.

“We’ve got some great talent in this country and imagine how proud we’d all be to win something major like the World Cup and have done it with all purely Englishborn players.

“That would be my dream.”

Wane (right) overlooked Australian-born half-backs Jackson Hastings and Blake Austin – who both represented Great Britain last year – when naming his first England group in March, while leaving the door open for both.

He has also refused to get carried away with the form of a cluster of Englishmen in the NRL at present.

Wane said: “Without being awkward I’m never really happy with anybody and I want the players to be the same.

“I don’t want them walking off the field patting themselves on the back, I want them to walk off no matter how they’ve played looking at improving.

“The commentators in Australia at the weekend were talking about George Williams, Ryan Sutton and Elliott Whitehead, but I know what they can do and they can do better.

“I’ll never walk around patting players on the back – I’ll encourage them, say well done, but ask what’s next and how do we need to improve.

“That’s the attitude I want from England players.

“What George is doing at Canberra at the minute he’s done for me for years – they’ve just not watched

Super League.

“He’s doing what he’s done for Wigan, and he’s done more for Wigan.

“I know what George is capable of.”
