HARKING BACK TO A CLASSIC BIKING ERA
ROYAL Enfield fans were surprised, one might even say shocked, when the firm announced in February that it was discontinuing production of its 500cc engine. The single-cylinder motor had been used since 2009 in the Bullet and Classic models – but with a heritage stretching back to the 1950s.
In part, the move was to do with emission controls in the firm’s home country of India. But it also signalled a commitment to move the range forward with an emphasis on its new 650cc parallel twin engine, as used in the Continental GT, and the Interceptor, the bike I am riding here.
To my eye this is a great looking bike.
It’s clean and beautifully basic, harking back to an age when motorcycling was a simpler affair.
Jump on board that plush bench seat and you’re struck by the minimalism. ABS is standard, of course, but other than that there is a distinct lack of electronic wizardry.
Classically styled twin clocks show speed and revs, and a small digital screen gives you a fuel gauge, odometer and two trip meters.
The ride position is relaxed, upright and comfortable. In fact, the same could be said for the entire riding experience. With just 46bhp available the Interceptor is never going to be a seat-of-your pants affair. Rather the light, smooth, slip-assist clutch, the precise six-speed gearbox, the responsive throttle and plenty of low-down torque makes for refined progress.
The typical twin-cylinder rumble through the dual upswept exhausts adds to the vibe. Optional S&S cans are available for those who want more volume.
Push hard through more challenging bends, however, and the limitations of the rather soft suspension become apparent although, at this price, there had to be some compromises. Braking is perfectly acceptable despite only a single front disc – using a Bybre (budget Brembo) twin piston, Bosch
ABS and a decent amount of engine braking.
Riding the Interceptor is genuinely a fun, laid-back experience.
It’s simple, unchallenging and will appeal to newish riders (it’s available to A2 licence holders) and those seeking a bit of modern-day nostalgia.
