WILL Ferrell has described Irish star Pierce Brosnan as “funny and weird” and said he always looks “cool”.

Many people would be thrilled to have the Co Meath legend, 67, play their father in a movie, but that’s what happened when 52-year-old Will wrote his new comedy Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga.

He created a role where his father is the most handsome man in the world and his own father admitted he was both jealous and flattered.

Speaking from his home in LA, Will told the Irish Mirror: “It’s pretty nice to have James Bond as your father. It’s also great when you literally write the actor in that you want to play the part and they actually want to do it.”

The Netflix movie is a very affectionate send-up of Eurovision, which Will became aware of from visits to Sweden, where his wife comes from, and Ireland as his father’s ancestors hailed from Co Leitrim.

He plays Icelandic singer Lars who is a passionate fan of Eurovision and is prepared to do whatever it takes to win.

Will said: “Pierce, to his credit, was funny and weird and different enough to want to do it and he’s the ultimate gentleman.

“No matter how silly you try to make him, he still looks cool.

“We were shooting a scene on a fishing boat, where he gives me this triumphant speech about being a Viking and pursuing a dream.

“We were filming in 5ft swells and the entire crew was getting sick.

“In between takes there’s Pierce with his aviator sunglasses taking selfies and having the best time. He truly is James Bond – he does not ruffle, ever. My dad was not even that jealous. He was like, ‘Please, can I meet him someday?”

“We have to make that happen. Maybe on one of our return trips to Ireland we can co-ordinate it. We’ll see.”

Will has been married for more than 20 years to Viveca, whom he met at an acting class in LA.

They have two sons and the family spends most summers in Sweden. This is the second Scandinavian movie he has made in the past year.

He also starred in Downhill, the remake of the Swedish film Force Majeure. Will added: “Sweden is always a prolific place for me to come up with ideas. Whether it’s the culture or not, I’m not sure, but I love going there to recharge my batteries. In our visits to
