RONNIE HAUGHEY CHANGES TO BE SWIFT

By Markethill mistakes won’t happen again promises Crewe’s Mccarthy

now we are up and running all the players will benefit the more we play.

“Although we’ve had a few training sessions and friendlies we lost an important week because of a Covid scare following our home game against Cliftonville and I thought some of our players looked a big leggy in the final third of Saturday’s game.

“We don’t have a game midweek so it gives us an opportunity this to work on a few things ahead of the trip to Valley Rangers at the weekend.”

Crewe’s goals against Markethill came from regular ace striker Dan Smith and new signing Paul Scullion, who Mccarthy has been very pleased with what he has seen so far from the former Cliftonville youth team and under 20s player.

“Paul has impressed me since signing for us, he’s a great lad with a lot of talent who just wants to do his best and score goals,” enthused Mccarthy.

“We also brought on board right-back Tiernan Mcauley who has played 17 times for Glentoran’s first team before a cruciate ligament injury set him back.

“Tiernan’s still only 22 and will be a great asset for us as will midfielder Noel Halfpenny and centre-half Dylan Whiteway who both came in from Knockbreda.”

Mccarthy also has added a bit of experience to his squad in the shape of former Ballyclare Comrades midfielder Gary

Brown who put in an impressive first 45 against Markethill before picking up an injury just before the interval.

“Gary was bossing the game for us but he tweaked the groin just before the break and wasn’t as effective after that,” explained Mccarthy.

“He was out for a year with a hamstring injury and unfortunately you’re always susceptible to picking up strains after that length of time not playing.

“Former Crumlin Star manager Sean Brown has also come on board as my assistant and I’m looking forward to working with him. Saucy’s a top man who knows what it takes to win trophies so his experience will be of great benefit to the club.”
