Just chillin’
Coldest Bank Hol Monday ever today, but sun’s back next week
A PICTURESQUE Cotswolds village has been overwhelmed by tourists.
Bourton-on-the-water, Gloucs, nicknamed the Venice of the Cotswolds, has suffered weeks of traffic jams, illegal parking and litter during the holidays.
Locals say up to 5,000 cars have arrived on the busiest days.
Parish council chairman Bob Hadley said: “It’s too much for a little village.”
Retired farmer Bill Limbrick, 74, added: “The place has gone berserk.”
But restaurateur Donna Holland welcomed the boom in business.
HOLIDAYMAKERS made the most of sunshine at beaches and beauty spots yesterday – before a bracing blast of cold rushes in today on the chilliest Bank Holiday Monday since records began.
While temperatures are set to rise again next week, things will get pretty nippy today, with lows of -1C expected in Scotland.
The mercury will dip to 19C in London and 16 degrees in Newcastle and Sheffield.
The cold snap is in sharp contrast to last year’s August bank holiday, when we had record highs of 33C. But the sunshine is due to return and we could see temperatures in the mid-20s next week.
A Met Office spokesperson said: “We could potentially see one of the coldest late
Bank Holiday Mondays on record in certain parts of the UK. Whether we reach record cold temperatures or not, it is still a big difference compared to last year when we had the hottest late August Bank Holiday on record at 33.3C.”
A 500 mile-wide “polar plunge” will sweep across the UK today. The week will be unsettled, with rain in the northwest tomorrow. From Thursday, the Met Office says the South will get “the best of any drier weather”.
Next week, we will return to clear skies and sun across Northern Ireland. Belfast could reach18c, with the rest of the UK in the high teens. Bookies Coral slashed odds to 2-1 on the hottest ever September. It said: “We’ve endured some miserable August weather but it’s going to get better.”
