Spurs strike late as Kane sets up Son for fine winner

- BY GIDEON BROOKS Michael Oliver

HARRY KANE and Heungmin Son kept up their devastating partnership to continue Tottenham’s fine start to the season.

In an arm-wrestle against a spirited Burnley, it took one moment of brilliance from the pair 14 minutes from time to break the stalemate.

Linking at a corner, Son got on the end of Kane’s f licked header for his eighth goal of the league season and 10th in all competitions.

It was also the 29th assist and strike for a partnership fast becoming a Premier League standout.

Spurs have not found goals hard to come by so far this season with 19 in their previous four matches before last night. But they were made to fight every inch of the way on a cold night in Lancashire.

Jose Mourinho has found Burnley accommodating opposition during his career in England , winning five and draw in g f o u r of h i s n i n e matches before this l at est encounter at Turf Moor.

Yet he has been around long enough not to take anything for granted, particularly managing a side who followed up a 6-1 win at Old Trafford by letting slip a three-goal lead in 10 minutes against West Ham.

And if the pre-match words from Sean Dyche, promising Burnley would play a style “awkward and hard to get a grip of ”, did not tell him his side were in a battle, some of the early challenges did.

Burnley were muscular from the off, as they searched for a first win in the league at the fifth a tt e mpt . Th e i r a g g re ssiv e approach left Spurs in no doubt they would have to scrap for the points, if they were to continue their manager’s i mpressive record.

It was l argely l egal stuf f, although Josh Brownhill copped an early yellow for hauling back Tanguy Ndombele.

And Ashley Barnes clattered Toby Alderweireld with a stray elbow in an aerial challenge, leaving the Spurs defender with a cut eyebrow and a Terry Butcher-style bandage.

Tackles flew in left, right and centre, and the pace was fast and furious. Spurs enjoyed possession early with Ndombele, Son and Lucas Moura creating some panic with their driving runs, but they found the final route to Kane effectively cut off.

As the half wore on, Burnley’s tactics promised dividends as well.

Both Ashley Westwood and Johann Gudmundsson forced decent saves from Hugo Lloris with low shots, as a frenetic first half finished with the Clarets having created marginally the better chances. The second half continued in much the sam same vein with bodies thrown on the line to block ef forts at both ends.

Ben Davies was out quickly to a fierce shot from Westwood on the edge of the area. Alderweireld smothered a chance for Barnes after Chris Wood nodded the ball across the six-yard box.

Burnley ’s best chance came with

15 minutes es to go with James Tarkowski ki having a header cleared off f the line by Kane.

But the Clarets were made to pay a few minutes later when a corner at the other end was turned in by Son.

Kane played ayed a huge part in the Spurs goal turning an

Erik Lamela mela corner – which looked oked to have been delivered vered behind the danger r zone – back live with a smart mart header falling back.

His directed ected glance towards the far post ost was turned in by Son (celebrating, brating, right).

It was tough ough on Burnley, who remain in the Premier League’s bottom three, ree, alongside Fulham and Sheffield eld United. Spurs are fifth, two points off top spot.
