THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD, PART2

Leicester 2016 title win was football’s ultimate fairytale... in this mad season, it couldn’t happen again could it?

- BY DAVE ARMITAGE

LEICESTER could sit top of the Premier League again come Sunday – prompting flashbacks of their shock title win.

Brendan Rodgers’ highflying Foxes will reach the summit again, if only for a couple of hours, should they beat Wolves.

Then they have to wait for the outcome of the heavyweight clash between Manchester City and leaders Liverpool, which kicks off after their game has finished.

It is proving to be a mad season already and, suddenly, there are rumblings about whether Leicester could stage a repeat of their 5,000-1 fairytale in 2016 (Claudio Ranieri and team with the Premier League trophy, right).

The Foxes’ stunning start shows they have managed to put last season’ s postlockdown collapse well and truly behind them. Rodgers’ men looked nailed on for a Champions League spot, but limped home with just two wins from their last nine matches, and were overtaken ken by Chelsea and Manchester United to finish fifth.

But there’s been no hangover gover and

In fact, ct, since e

Rodgers took charge of his first game in March 2019, only Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool (46) and Pep Guardiola at City (38) have won more Premier League matches.

Academy graduate Harvey Barnes opened open the f loodgates a at Elland Road with a thirdminute goa goal, and the 22-year-old is one of the key reasons Leicester are up there with the big boys. Rodgers believes Barnes can be a “superstar” at the club and his i mpressive f orm has already shot him into the England set-up.

Barnes (above) made his Three Lions d ebut last month, coming on as a sub in the 3-0 Wembley friendly win over Wales. His strike against Leeds was his third of the season – well on the way to beating last campaign’s haul of si x , wit h eight assists.

Rodgers said: “It’s abou t increasing his numbers. If he can get i nto double figures this year, and makes a number of assi sts, th en he’ll be a superstar for us. We’re trying to improve his running off the ball and getting more scoring opportunities. At times last season he was electric.”

Barnes said: “We’re very happy with our start. We knew after the disappointing end to last season how important it was going to be to get off to a good start.

“We’ve done that, not only in the Premier League, but in the Europa League as well.

“We’re just sticking to the game plan we’re setting for each game. We’ve gone to some tough places so far and come away with wins, so credit to us. Being clinical has been the main thing.

“Leeds was a massive result for us. We knew it would be tough, but we executed our game plan well.

“We had to pick and choose when we were going to press them, but it worked.”
