Could not make a big breakthrough at Liverpool, had an excellent scoring season at Swansea on loan, and was sold for £23m to Sheffield United last summer. He won the golden boot with eight goals and one assist in the tournament.

WATFORD royalty Luther Blissett was “disgusted” by the club’s “shameful PR” after they recycled an old insult to spin an interview with struggling striker Andre Gray.

Former England forward Blissett (above), 63, was outraged by a reference to ‘Luther Miss-it’ – a crass and misleading nickname for the Hornets’ all-time record goalscorer – to sugarcoat Gray’s dismal form.

Gray’s interview with Watford’s official website was intended as a promise to make amends.

But Blissett was incensed to learn the set-piece with Gray included a throwback to the season when trolls gave him the ‘Miss-it’ nickname – even though he won Europe’s Golden Boot by rattling in 33 goals.

Blissett – who scored 186 in 503 games for the Hornets – raged: “Speaking honestly, this is shameful PR. I am disgusted that the club has included me in this artful production.

“Portraying my goalscoring ability in a negative way simply to justify their player and gain sympathy for his behaviour both on and off the pitch to unhappy fans is not the way.

“To beat Ian Rush to the Golden Boot with 27 league goals, 33 overall, is only a couple short of Mo Salah’s Premier League record. So I won’t apologise for any that didn’t go in.”
