TWO-GOAL MEWIS IS GREIGHT FOR CITY

- BY JON WEST

SAM MEWIS scored twice in a 4-0 drubbing of Birmingham that moved Manchester City to within two points of WSL leaders Chelsea.

The USA international struck either side of the break (above, her first goal), Lauren Hemp floated in a third and Caroline Weir tapped in.

It was an eighth straight league win for City, whose goal difference of plus 39 is equal to Chelsea’s.

The thrashing ended a tough week for Birmingham boss Carla Ward, who had two players suspended for breaching Covid rules.

Leicester, who punished 10 of their players for attending the same party, beat Crystal Palace 1-0 in their Championship fixture.

Arsenal brushed aside Aston Villa 4-0 for their first win of the year.

The floodgates opened after a goalless first half, with Vivianne Miedema,

Jordan Nobbs, Katie Mccabe and Lisa Evans on target.

The Gunners improved their Champions League hopes by moving to within six points of third-placed Manchester United, and have a game in hand.

Jill Scott scored the clincher in Everton’s 3-2 win at Tottenham.

The midfielder, on loan from Manchester City and who won her 150th England cap in midweek, added to two Valerie Gauvin penalties.

Goals from Angela Addison and Gemma Davison brought Spurs level at 2-2 but Scott had the last word.

Everton head coach

Willie Kirk said: “She’s fantastic, she’s a great addition.

“Her enthusiasm is infectious.

“I said when we signed her that although it was a short-term loan we would get long-term benefits – and without a doubt we will.”
