BBC three cheers

-

BBC3 will rise again as a proper channel after bosses staged a dramatic U-turn.

The TV station disappeared in 2016 and was replaced by an online-only version available via the iplayer, aimed at younger viewers.

Now, after research showed some young people still like to watch proper telly (gasp), it will return next January, subject to the approval by Ofcom.

The BBC said it had committed to doubling the investment on commissions for the channel over the next two years following the astounding success of shows including Normal People and Fleabag. The TV channel will still target 16 to 34-year-olds and broadcast from 7pm to 4am each day – meaning CBBC will revert to closing at 7pm.

The BBC hopes running a broadcast channel and iplayer in tandem will prove a winning combination.

Boss Charlotte Moore said: “The BBC needs to back success and make sure its programmes reach as many young people as possible wherever they live in the UK.

“We want to give BBC Three its own broadcast channel again. It has exciting, ground-breaking content that deserves the widest possible audience.” Yay.

“I can’t take the credit for this masterpiece of the Beatles – that goes to my 18-year-old daughter Niamh O’connor who is currently studying music at art college,” says proud dad Eamon O’connor.

Niamh’s artistic talents also extend to singing and playing trumpet, piano and guitar. Her dad adds: “She’s currently at art college in Greenwich studying music. She just loves music and art and is a talented singer – she sings every waking hour!”
