MPS have rebuked the Government in an escalation of the spat over free TV licences for over-75s.

A committee overseeing Downing Street’s response to a petition calling on ministers to restore the lifeline said the Tories “did not directly address the request” and have asked for a “revised response”.

Only those who receive Pension Credit are eligible for a free licence – meaning an estimated 3.7million must pay £157.50 a year, rising to £159 next month.

THE number of regulatory checks required on goods arriving here from Great Britain equates to 20% of the total undertaken by the entire EU, a Stormont official has said.

Denis Mcmahon, permanent secretary at the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, added: “The checks, according to the systems, completed so far would represent one fifth of the equivalent documentation right across the EU.”

POLICE involved in an “ongoing investigation into the New IRA” arrested a woman yesterday.

The 35-year-old was detained in North Belfast and taken to Musgrave station as part of Operation Arbacia.

Det Chief Supt Raymond Murray said: “Since the arrest and charging of eight men and two women last August, police have continued examining lines of inquiry in connection with this ongoing investigation into the activities of the New IRA.

“Despite significant progress against the New IRA, we cannot be complacent in any way about investigating their activities. Those investigations are most effective when police and communities work together.

“The New IRA continue to pose a danger, especially to the communities in the areas they live and conduct their activities in.

“Not least is their willingness to put local people at risk in their reckless haste to carry out bombings and shootings. In fact they often store their guns and bombs in public areas where members of the community including children are put at risk.”

A NORTHERN Ireland man has been remembered during a Premier League match featuring his beloved team after dying from stroke.

Tyler Morrow, 21, from Bangor, Co Down, passed away in hospital three days after taking ill last Tuesday.

The huge Aston Villa fan’s death was mentioned in the 21st minute of his team’s match against Sheffield United on Wednesday night.

The commentator said: “Some very sad news this week about the passing of Tyler Morrow, a strong and healthy young man who sadly lost his life last week.

“He was a huge Aston Villa fan and in normal circumstances all four sides probably would be united in a round of applause at this moment.

“At this sad time our thoughts go out to his friends and family. He was just 21 years of age.”

Tyler’s cousin Shann Anderson spoke of the family’s grief on Facebook.

She wrote: “During the Aston Villa game at the 21st minute my beautiful cousin Tyler Morrow was remembered.

“The family have done so amazing and Tyler has had so much love spread across social media by many.

“Forever in our hearts and loved by many, you truly are one of a kind.”
