BRITTLE BRITTAIN

Defender Callum Tykes a pop at team, boss and fans in unity call

- BARNSLEY MILLWALL M Wallace IAN MURTAGH

STRAIGHT-TALKING Callum Brittain pointed the finger and no one escaped blame when he reflected on Barnsley’s disastrous start to the campaign.

Visibly upset after Murray Wallace’s lastgasp header for Millwall stretched the Tykes’ winless run to nine games, Brittain is demanding a united front in a bid to climb away from the relegation zone.

And while the defender accepts the players must take their share of culpability and that new boss Markus Schopp has hardly set the world alight, Barnsley fans did not emerge unscathed from his tirade.

There were chants against the Austrian manager in the minutes before and after Wallace’s goal (right) and after the final whistle, and Cauley Woodrow had to be restrained by team-mates after reacting angrily to terrace abuse.

Having a go at your own fans is a dangerous game but Brittain (above) believes that after a summer of turmoil, which saw the departure of Valerien Ismael, his coaching staff, some key players and the chief executive from Oakwell, the club needs everyone pulling in the same direction right now.

“We all need to come together as one,” he said.

“It’s easy to blame the manager and he knows he has to do better, same with the staff and players.

“I even think the fans do too. If they really got behind us, maybe we can kick on. I know it is disappointing for them but it’s not nice when you are getting abused and I personally do not think that is good enough.

“We all need to start on a fresh page when we come back.”

Millwall boss Gary Rowett is not getting carried away and will not set his side any lofty targets after a second straight win, their first on the road this season.

But after the Lions extended their unbeaten league run to seven games, he is looking up.

“Our aim is to be pushing for the top 10. Do that, then you’re in and around the play-offs,” he said. “With the money some teams in this division have spent, it would be arrogant to say we expect to be in the top six but we’ll work incredibly hard to try to be up there.”
