ANOTHER SEVEN AND RODRIGUEZ IS MAGNIFICENT

- BY JON WEST

JAY RODRIGUEZ is homing in on a seven-goal target that should also boost Burnley’s battle to beat the drop.

The striker scored the 100th league goal of his career in the 1-1 draw with Manchester United earlier this month.

His next aim is to bring his total Premier League tally up to 50 before the end of the season.

He has 43 in two spells with Burnley and stints at Southampton and West Bromwich and will aim to add to that at Crystal Palace today.

Reaching his half century would also go a long way towards helping Sean Dyche’s side stay up.

And survival may mean the 32-year-old local lad landing a new contract with his current deal up in the summer.

“It would be great to get 50 – so let’s aim for that,” said Rodriguez. “It would help keep us up definitely.

“With the contract I am just keeping my head down. The main thing is to keep the club in the Premier League, so I’ll keep working hard.

“To represent them in the Premier League is a dream for a Burnley lad. It is something special to me and to keep going in the Premier League is a big thing for everybody in the town.”

The goal against United (being celebrated above with Dwight Mcneil) is Rodriguez’s only one in the Premier League so far this season, although he has five in the cups.

Dyche has kept faith with a man who played once for England in 2013, partnering him up front with January signing

Wout Weghorst.

The Dutchman got off the mark in last week’s 3-0 win at Brighton and he and Rodriguez helped the Clarets to a 1-0 victory over Spurs in midweek.

Rodriguez added: “Off the field he’s a great lad, he has fitted straight into the group.”
