1,000 are killed as quake razes homes

RESCUERS recover a body after a massive earthquake killed at least 1,000 people and injured 1,500 more in a remote and impoverish­ed part of Afghanista­n.

Pictures showed powerful landslides and whole villages collapsed into mounds of earth in the eastern province of

Paktika. Hundreds of houses, many of them built from mud, were destroyed by the magnitude 6.1 event, which occurred at a depth of 32 miles.
