Turkey lovers to be stuffed for Christmas

- BY RUKI SAYID Consumer Editor

FAMILIES are being warned of a turkey shortage at Christmas amid rising production costs and bird flu.

Stocks have been cut by up to 50% by larger producers, while smaller ones have said they will not rear the birds for Christmas this year.

The bleak outlook from the National Farmers’ Union comes as Russia’s war on Ukraine continues to impact wheat supplies crucial for animal feed.

Prices have doubled year-on-year to £300 a ton and the NFU’S Michael Bailey said: “There is definitely going to be a reduced production of turkeys for Christmas.”

The birds have also been hit hard by the UK’S longest ever avian flu outbreak.
