- BY MARK BRANAGAN

THE curtain has come down on a 76-year loan of a play from a library.

A man tidying his dead mother’s bookshelves found This Way to the Tomb by Ronald Duncan, due back on July 17, 1946.

Keighley library, West Yorks, has waived the charge, which would have been £3,552.45 at the current rate of 15p a day.

Eileen Hoyle, of nearby Haworth, was the second person to borrow the book.

Charlie Studdy, who found it on the shelf, said: “My mother loved books all the way through her life. She was an avid reader until the end.”

In Mr Studdy’s email to the library service he said: “I’m more than happy to send it to you, but less enthusiastic about paying any fine’.”
