CHARLES IS EGGED
Protest suspect is bundled to ground
THE King and Queen Consort were nearly hit by eggs hurled by a protester yelling: “This country was built on the blood of slaves.”
Patrick Thelwell, 23, was allegedly seen lobbing four eggs which landed near Charles and wife Camilla.
They all missed. Mr Thelwell was bundled to the ground by police officers in York.
Horrified bystanders sided with the royal couple with some shouting “shame on you” and “God save The King”.
Social media profiles believed to belong to student Mr Thelwell show rants against the Royal family. One post after Elizabeth II’S death
read: “Qunes dead (sic), drinks on me? Finally time to
SUSPECT Police detain protester #Abolishthemonarchy and usher in a new era of anti-fascist, ecological, direct democracy.”
In an apparent reference to Charles, he said: “I will not bow to the new false king.”
Lifelong environmentalist Charles was standing next to
Camilla as the mayhem erupted shortly after they arrived at Micklegate Bar, on their two-day visit to Yorkshire.
The drama did not derail the King’s main engagement at York Minster where he unveiled a 7ft statue of the late Queen.
Charles and Camilla met Jason Tweedie-long, five, who has a visual impairment.
His grandmother, Wendy Loveday, said: “It made our day. How kind of them. We will never forget this.”
Police said: “A well-rehearsed security operation was in place to ensure the safety of the King and Queen Consort. A 23-yearold man was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence following an incident on Micklegate in York. He remains in police custody.”
