I’M ON SONG IN MY YODEL ROLE

-

THIS time last year Nick Lakin was working in a seasonal Christmas job helping delivery giant Yodel handle the festive madness. Twelve months on and Nick, 57, from Truro, has turned that into a permanent job which he loves.

What does your job involve on a day-to-day basis?

My job in customer service support at the Truro local delivery depot is really varied. It involves resolving any customer queries and supporting my colleagues whenever necessary.

I enjoy providing solutions for both customers and all my colleagues – it is really satisfying.

The challenges are usually unforeseen, you never know what you might have to deal with but I love solving problems.

I am also studying a one-year apprenticeship course with Yodel for a Level 2 Customer Service Practitioner – it is great to be learning new skills.

Is it getting busy yet for Christmas?

Christmas is always a busy time at Yodel and it gets busier as we get closer to the big day. We prepare for this every year by bringing on new colleagues to support in delivering parcels and we adjust shift patterns where needed to support the team. You can feel the excitement brewing.

Team morale is high though and we are ready with our festive spirit.

What led you to start working for Yodel?

I had been working nearby as a product controller for a company which closed. That was what it took to make the move. I saw the job advertised online. It was August 2021 – just when Yodel starts building up for Christmas.

I have always worked in customer service, and this is what initially interested me about the role. The people I work with are like a family, so it became more than just a job to me very quickly.

What was the temp job like?

The first six months were challenging as I found my way around the systems and gained experience, but everyone I worked with was really patient and were prepared to help me out.

How did it become a permanent job?

After being initially offered a temporary role at the Truro delivery depot, I (like any candidate) was assessed by the management team to see if a permanent contract was appropriate. After being supported with all my learning and developing within my customer service support role, my manager offered the opportunity to stay on permanently, which I gladly accepted.

I am now confident in my role and looking forward to working at Yodel for many years to come.

Why should people think about getting a seasonal job?

Above all else it allows you to earn extra money at Christmas.

Most companies have busy periods and casual workers – like students during their holidays – can also find something to suit them. A seasonal job gives you a chance to try out the role and the company, while also getting to know the team.
