Spy slip-up
IT’S hard to understand the twisted thinking of traitor David Smith.
The former security guard at the British Embassy in Berlin now faces years in jail after admitting spying for Russia.
He so hated Britain he passed secrets to Vladimir Putin’s regime even as the Russian leader was plotting his vile invasion of Ukraine.
While this may be an exceptional case, it raises questions about the robustness of the Foreign Office vetting process.
It is extraordinary that someone who so clearly sympathised with Russia was allowed to work in such a sensitive environment.
We may never know the full consequences of Smith’s treachery but we can take comfort from the fact that the regime he supported has been humbled by the Ukrainian armed forces.
