Troops pour into Qatar to boost safety

- BY JEREMY ARMSTRONG

SOME 4,500 soldiers have been sent to Qatar by Pakistan to provide security at the World Cup, backed by Royal Navy patrols.

Britain, the US and Turkey are among 12 nations helping with the Qatari-led international security effort, but only Pakistan has sent troops.

A military source said: “They will be deployed on security duties inside and outside venues.”

Most will be armed, and they will also be responsible for guarding team hotels.

Turkey will send 3,000 riot police and sniffer dogs.

The Royal Navy has three minehunters in the Central Gulf until Christmas.

Commander Adrian Visram, overseeing the Royal Navy effort involving 200 personnel, said: “It is an immense privilege.”
