Leon Trotsky was expelled from the ruling Communist Party after leading a failed campaign against rival Stalin. He was killed by a Soviet agent in Mexico in 1940.

38 YEARS AGO (1984)

Tory Chancellor Nigel Lawson announced the £1 note would be withdrawn and replaced with a £1 coin. The £1 note ceased to be legal tender on March 11, 1988.
