THE King leading tributes on Remembranc­e Sunday at the Cenotaph in Whitehall was a changing of the royal guard.

The absence of Queen Elizabeth II, a fixture at national moments for 70 years, is a change that still requires some getting used to.

The ranks of veterans from past conflicts are thinned every November, but what never changes is the comradeshi­p of men and women who served together.

We owe a debt of honour to those of whom poet John Maxwell Edmonds said: “For your tomorrows these gave their today.”
