Working class in ‘£6,700 pay gap’
THERE is a £6,700 “class pay gap” among people working in higher professional-managerial positions, a report by the Social Mobility Foundation reveals.
The findings suggest that, from today, those from working class backgrounds stop earning for the rest of the year relative to their posher peers.
They also face a “double disadvantage” when gender and ethnic differences are taken into consideration .
Working class women are paid £9,450 less than their male colleagues, while people of Bangladeshi and black Caribbean heritage are paid £10,432 and £8,770 less respectively than white peers in the same jobs.
Sarah Atkinson, of the foundation, said: “In Britain, it still – quite literally – pays to be privileged.”
