HONG KONG’S FIGHT
FOR FREEDOM
BBC2, 9.30pm
Delving into the story of the 2019 Hong Kong protests, this follows the real lives of young citizens there on the front line.
It begins when a young, pregnant woman is brutally murdered by her boyfriend while on holiday in Taiwan.
Despite confessing to the murder back in Hong Kong, he cannot be prosecuted or extradited for the crime.
The Hong Kong government proposes an extradition bill to allow
the fugitive to be sent back to Taiwan to stand trial, but the bill would also allow extradition to other territories, including mainland China.
This sparks a wave of anger across the city, as many fear Hong Kong’s long-held autonomy from mainland China is under threat.
Protests against the new bill quickly escalate, as hundreds of thousands take to the streets feeling their freedom is being eroded.
The protests begin peacefully, but soon the citizens find themselves drawn into a cycle of violence that threatens to tear the city apart.
