OUR WAKE-UP GALL

- SIMON BIRD

CONOR GALLAGHER wants defeat on Tyneside to be a wake-up call for Chelsea.

The World Cup-bound midfielder, denied an equaliser by a brilliant Nick Pope save in the second half, said: “We’ve got to be better and we need to take a look at ourselves.

“Physically, they were stronger than us and a lot more intense and that’s something we need to improve on. If we want to be challenging for titles, then we need to be so much better. We know there’s a lot to improve on.”

Chelsea have now gone five matches without a win and are eight points off the top four. They’ve won only six of their 14 Premier League matches, losing five.

Local rivals Fulham are only two points behind them.

On his big chance, Gallagher (right) said: “It was a bit of a soft shot and Pope got across to cover the goal well. I was hoping it would creep in. We conceded soon after that chance and that’s really disappointing.”
