Ivan bins ‘respect’ for glory

- BY GIDEON BROOKS

IVAN TONEY said Brentford got their tactics spot on by showing Manchester City “no respect”.

The Bees striker turned the disappointment of his World Cup snub into a match-winning display.

And Toney (above) maintained it was important that Brentford stood tall and met City eye to eye.

He said: “They’re Man City but they’re humans – you can’t respect them too much because they’ll walk all over you and take it all.

“We showed them no respect, we worked hard and fully deserved the three points.

“Little Brentford came here and got a result and we deserved that.”

Toney revealed that at the break when the scores were level he shocked manager Thomas Frank with a confident prediction.

“At half-time me and the gaffer spoke to each other and we said that we wanted to win. Of course we wanted to win,” said Toney.

“I said ‘we will win’... and he kind of looked at me like I was crazy.

“But the boys dug in and worked hard and I felt that we fully deserved the three points.”

Frank insisted Toney could yet do a job for Gareth Southgate in Qatar.

“If there is an injury to one of the forward players, I hope he will think about Ivan,” said Frank.

“People are defined by how they respond to setbacks, a major setback, and you can either feel sorry for yourself or respond and put in a top performance out there.

“We are playing a game against the best team in the world and Ivan has scored two goals and had five chances.”
