A DUTCH OF CLASS HELPS VIK

- BY JOHN WRAGG

GUS HAMER is not a big fan of watching football on TV and will be playing with his son rather than tuning in to the World Cup.

But he is taking seriously Coventry’s chances of being in the Premier League next season.

The Brazilian-born Dutchman and midfield partner Callum O’hare provide the bullets for Viktor Gyokeres to fire.

It has been working so well that in four weeks Coventry have zoomed from 23rd to two points off the Championship play-offs.

Gyokeres scored two (above right celebrating with O’hare) and had a hat-trick denied by a superb save from QPR goalkeeper Seny Dieng.

Rangers, top of the table not so long ago, were toothless while it is seven wins out of nine for City who, when they kick-off again at Reading on December 10, will be a team to be feared.

“It’s still too early to say if we will go straight up or get in the play-offs,” said Hamer. “Viktor is an amazing player. He has so much quality he can always bang one in. Viktor is on a run at the moment and so are we as a team. Four wins in a row is outstanding and we can be very proud of it.

“We play for each other, we have quality throughout the side and we work hard.”

On the World Cup he added: “I don’t watch a lot of football. I haven’t the concentration for it. I’ll watch England and Holland play but I’d rather be kicking a ball about with my three-year-old.”

But QPR boss Michael Beale is welcoming the tournament after five games without a win.

“The break comes at a perfect time,” he said. “This is our blip but we’re still seventh. We’re missing five or six players who should be available when we return against Burnley.”
