Sir Iain’s fear for his wife in ‘cone attack’
FORMER Tory leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith told a court yesterday how he feared for his wife Betsy when he had a traffic cone “slammed” on to his head.
The MP, 68, said the cone was “smacked down” on him as he walked in Manchester during the Conservative Party conference in October last year.
Sir Iain told Manchester magistrates court: “It was threatening, it was abusive and my wife and her friend felt that particularly.”
He was giving evidence at the trial of Elliot Bovill, 32, of no fixed address, who denies common assault.
Bovill is on trial with Radical Haslam, 29, of Manchester, and Ruth Wood, 52, of Cambridge, who both deny using threatening behaviour.
The trial continues.
