Big 3 pledge on rainforest
BRAZIL, Indonesia and the Congo, home to half the world’s tropical rainforests, have signed a pact to help end deforestation.
The agreement, announced yesterday at COP27 in Egypt, was signed by ministers from all three countries, who pledged to work together to establish a “funding mechanism”.
It is expected the plan, which has no financial backing, will press for “payments to protect forests.” It does not say who or what would provide payments but it builds on earlier initiatives for keeping forests intact.
Brazil’s new president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is expected to discuss efforts to save the Amazon and other forests.
