Stormzy: Boy, did I mess up
It must have been awkward backstage at the MTV awards...
Stormzy says his break-up from Maya Jama “devastated his world” – and both attended the Dusseldorf bash on Sunday.
But the grime star says he felt forced to change his behaviour in the wake of his spilt from the new Love Island host, as he realised he “was a boy”.
The couple dated for four years before calling it quits in 2020 amid rumours of his infidelity, which he has denied.
“I’d never experienced a breakup and the feelings that come with a break-up,” he tells GQ.
“It showed me that I was a boy. And I do not want to go any further as a boy. I don’t want to be like that.”
The split made him focus on “the necessary work I have to do to make sure I’m not in this position again”, he added, speaking ahead of tomorrow’s GQ Men Of The Year Celebration 2022 in association with BOSS.
“That means growth, accountability, changing my character, changing my routines, my habits, my tradition, my values, my morals.
“Because how I feel right now and how I’ve made someone else feel and how I’ve devastated a world that I was living in – I never want to be in this position again. “Everything I’d achieved for myself did nothing for how I was feeling in real time.”
However, he did achieve another goal on Sunday, which he documented on social media – a quest to get a selfie with Taylor Swift. He even got his make-up done in preparation.
