Dogs can sniff out our stress

It’s been said dogs can sniff out fear. Now, new research shows we give off a different odour when we’re under even mild pressure and dogs can pick it up.

For a small study, 36 human volunteers gave a baseline sample of their breath and sweat. They then tried to solve a difficult maths problem, and gave a second sample. Then four dogs trained to identify scents were presented with the samples and they were able to detect which came from the volunteers when they were relaxed, and which came from after they’d taken the maths test, all with an accuracy rate of more than 90%.
