Leah: England’s Swede success
GQ’S Captain of Year thanks ABBA for goals
GQ’S new Captain of the Year Leah Williamson believes a Swedish pop group Abba-solutely played a big part in the Lionesses’ Euros triumph.
She joined running legend Sir Mo Farah, TV interviewer Louis Theroux, Catastrophe star Sharon Horgan and Spiderman Andrew Garfield on the honours list for the GQ Men of the Year bash last night.
And Leah credits 1979 hit
Does Your Mother Know as the soundtrack for success.
She said: “It has become a massive song for us. We played it before a warm-up game and [striker] Ella Toone went a bit crazy for it.
“She went out and scored, and then afterwards she was like, ‘Can we have that before every game?’ I went, ‘Yeah! You continue to score, I’ll play what you want’.” As she collected her gong from Arsenal legend Alex Scott, Leah added: “I represent a group of people who have been overlooked for such a long time.” Euphoria and White Lotus actress Sydney Sweeney, 25, was toasted, as was grime star Stormzy, 29, who said: “My version of success now means taking care of my family, having children, having a wife, even understanding marriage and raising kids.”
Andrew, 39, reckoned he could turn his back on Hollywood, saying he would “rent an apartment in London, and I can do theatre”. Normal People’s Daisy Edgar-jones, 24, and Hollywood A-lister Salma Hayek, 56, were also at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, in London, for the GQ Men of the Year celebration in association with BOSS.
