Trump confirms White House bid
DONALD Trump has officially announced his third run for the White House despite declining support from fellow Republicans.
The twice-impeached former President, who tried to overturn the election that ousted him, announced his “comeback” in a rambling, hour-long speech at his Mar-a-lago golf resort in Florida.
The news came as Republicans continued to distance themselves from Mr
Trump after disappointing midterm election results indicated his appeal has dramatically faded.
Claiming the US had fallen into decline in the two years since he was voted out of office, Mr
Trump branded US cities crime-ridden “cesspools of blood” and repeatedly told fans “America’s golden age is just ahead”.
He aired a string of familiar grievances and took aim at his enemies including Joe Biden, Mexican immigrants and China, which he suggested interfered with the 2020 election.
Speaking to several hundred supporters in the hotel’s ballroom he said: “In order to make America great and glorious again I am tonight announcing my candidacy for President of the United States. America’s comeback starts right now.”
Only one US President, Grover Cleveland, has been voted out of office and returned to retake the White House. But unlike Mr Trump, who lost the popular vote in both the 2016 and 2020 elections, President Cleveland got more votes than his opponents in all three of his races. Mr Trump was joined by wife Melania and sons Barron and Eric for the Palm Beach announcement.
But Donald Jr and Ivanka – both of whom played key roles in previous campaigns – did not attend. Ivanka said in a statement: “While I will always love and support my father, going forward I will do so outside the political arena.”
His defeat in the 2020 election led to his backers storming the White House.
